Rose Garden Palace, Dhaka – History, Location & Facts
The Rose Garden Palace is a beautiful 19th-century mansion located on K.M. Das Lane in Tikatuli, Old Dhaka, Bangladesh. Built by Hindu zamindar Hrishikesh Das, this historic landmark is famous for its stunning architecture and its role in Bangladesh’s political history. In 1949, it became the birthplace of the Awami League, one of the country’s major political parties.
History of Rose Garden Palace
In the late 19th century, Baldha Garden was the main social hub for Dhaka’s wealthy Hindu elite, hosting glamorous musical parties known as jalsas. Hrishikesh Das, a lower-caste zamindar, was reportedly insulted during one of these gatherings. Determined to outshine Baldha Garden, he built the Rose Garden Palace, complete with an elegant pavilion and landscaped gardens, for hosting grand parties and cultural events.

However, this lavish lifestyle led Hrishikesh into financial trouble, forcing him to sell the property in 1936 to Khan Bahadur Kazi Abdur Rashid, who renamed it Rashid Manzil. His family maintained and renovated the palace while preserving its original charm.

On 9 August 2018, the Government of Bangladesh purchased the Rose Garden Palace for ৳331.7 crore. The plan is to transform this iconic mansion into a museum, allowing visitors to explore its rich history, architecture, and cultural significance.
